The Leatherbarrow Family

The Leatherbarrows were wheelwrights and also made coffins.

The Births, Marriages and Deaths Registers appear to show that the Leatherbarrow name is local to the Lancashire area.

The House of Names gives the Leatherbarrows a family crest (to purchase) and suggests that:
"The name Leatherbarrow sprang from the ancient Anglo-Saxon culture of Britain. It comes from when the family lived in the region of Lathbury near Newport."

"Spelling variations of this family name include: Lathbury, Lathebury, Lathbiry, Lathebyr, Lathebyre, Lathburye, Lathburie and many more."

This might be correct, but smacks of an attempt to sell products for obscure names by linking them to similar sounding places and suggesting some sort of aristocratic status.

Much more likely that they were a family in Lancashire who made and used leather barrows. The censuses show Leatherbarrows in quite a small grouping in Lancashire. I have not checked Lathburys etc. in that part of the world
