The Marriage Bond and Marriage Allegation

From the Marriage Register at St Nicholas, Witham

Both signed their names and the witnesses were Thomas Allen and William Constable.

Thomas Allen

Thomas Allen from Witham married Ann Alder, a widow, of St George, Hannover Sq., Middlesex on 14th January, 1774.

Ann Alder's daughter from a previous (first?) marriage, was also called Ann and would have been around 8 at the time.

The Alders seem to have been from an area of London where Ann later lived with her husband Samuel - an area favoured by other Drewrys and descendants.

When Ann married Samuel she was described as being from Witham. Presumably her step-father, Thomas Allen, moved the family to Witham when he married Ann's mother.

Thomas had remarried after the death of Ann Alder (sen) and in his will left everything to his wife Charlotte. (He died on 4th April, 1814.)

The signature in Thomas Allen's will is the same as that of Thomas Allen witness to the marriage of Samuel and Ann Alder.

Ann died 7 months after the birth of her son Thomas Allen Drewry; one would imagine from complications with the birth.
